Why do you need a good onboarding and offboarding strategy?

New employees up and running fast, leavers without lingering access. A fixed approach prevents both risks.

Imagine A start-up with high turnover gives employees access to all company resources, including sensitive data and internal systems. There is no proper offboarding process. A former employee who leaves on bad terms notices he still has access to confidential information and takes it to a competitor. The result: a legal dispute, lost clients and reputational damage.

Good onboarding and offboarding isn't only about welcoming new colleagues, but also about carefully managing their access, and revoking it securely when they leave.

The goal

A good strategy makes sure access to systems and data is managed correctly throughout an employee's entire career. Everyone has exactly what they need to do their job: no more, but no less either. When someone no longer needs certain access, for example when they leave, it's revoked. That benefits security, continuity and productivity.

Onboarding: a critical phase

Imagine You start your first day full of enthusiasm, but run into technical problems all day: there's no laptop yet, your credentials don't work, you have no access to certain apps. In the weeks after, you still can't get to certain programs or data. A frustrating start that leaves you working below par weeks later.

Up and running quickly

Effective onboarding makes sure new employees immediately have access to the tools and information they need.

A warm welcome

Smooth onboarding gives a sense of welcome and a pleasant first day. That's how you turn new employees into ambassadors.

Secure from day one

Device security and password rules are part of onboarding too. That way all devices meet the security requirements from the start.

Compliance

Cybersecurity training fits perfectly into onboarding. Employees immediately know the risks, the company rules and the legal requirements around data and security.

Offboarding: revoke access immediately

Without a structured offboarding process, former employees often keep access to confidential information for a long time without anyone meaning to. That can go fine for a long time, but it only has to go wrong once to cause serious damage.

Good offboarding ends access to all company resources the moment the contract ends. Company property, such as devices and access cards, is reclaimed right away as well.

The role of MDM

Mobile Device Management (MDM) is an essential tool for the IT side of onboarding and offboarding. It lets you manage and secure all devices centrally, even when employees use their own devices.

  1. Configuration: set up devices quickly according to the company's security standards
  2. Security policy: enforce rules such as password requirements and encryption
  3. App management: distribute and manage company apps
  4. Locate and wipe: track down, lock or wipe lost or stolen devices. At one of our clients, this even led to a stolen device being returned

Automated Device Enrollment

With Automated Device Enrollment you deploy Macs, iPhones and iPads seamlessly and securely for new employees.

  • Zero-touch: devices are configured without complicated steps for the employee
  • Policy from the start: security rules are applied automatically during setup

Conclusion

Good onboarding and offboarding ensure security, compliance and a smooth experience for employees. With MDM and Automated Device Enrollment, it becomes a key to a stronger and safer company.

In short

New employees have the right devices and access from day one When someone leaves, all access is revoked immediately MDM and Automated Device Enrollment automate most of it
